About Thai Airways

Thai Airways was formed in 1988 with the merger of the domestic carrier Thai Airways Company and Thailands international carrier THAI and is fully owned by the Thai Government. It has grown to flying to over 70 destinations in more than 30 countries worldwide with a fleet of 90 aircraft. It has its base at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok and is a founding member of the Star Alliance. Thai Airways mostly flies in the South East Asian Region but is also dominant in the European routes. Once it operated the longest non-stop flights in the world from Bangkok to New York and Los Angeles but stopped with these flights due to high fuel prices and changed the flights to America into a one-stop service at Seoul (South Korea). Currently it is in the process of an aircraft renewal program and has placed large orders both at Boeing and Airbus. It currently uses the Boeing 747 Jumbojet, Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 and A340. It also placed orders for the new Boeing Dreamliner, the Airbus A350 and for 5 SuperJumbo A380. It is expanding its network with new destinations worldwide but it is feeling the cutthroat competition with AirAsia at its home, one of the reasons of its first operating loss in 2008 after 40 profitable years. It has started a low-cost carrier for the Thai domestic market, Nokair (fully owned) and it started with a regional carrier Thai Smile.

Thai Airways flies to over 79 destinations. Most Thai Airways flights are for destinations in India but Thai Airways has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example Thailand and Japan. From its main base in Bangkok 117 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Thai Airways tickets look for flights to Chiang Mai and Jakarta.
