AirAsia to link Surakarta, Lombok with Singapore

Low-cost carrier AirAsia Indonesia announced on Tuesday that it would connect Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara and Surakarta in Central Java with Singapore next year in order to meet higher travel demand.


AirAsia Indonesia president director Sunu Widyatmoko said that the carrier would begin the Lombok"“ Singapore and Surakarta"“Singapore flight services on Jan. 28 and Jan. 29, 2015, respectively, with the routes to be plied by Airbus A320 planes with total capacities of 180 seats.


"œWe are very enthusiastic about these two new routes because we want to increase air connectivity between Indonesia and Singapore. The flight services also show our commitment to promoting Indonesian destinations in the international market," Sunu said in Jakarta on Tuesday.


For the initial period, he said, AirAsia Indonesia would fly three times a week from both cities to Singapore, from Lombok on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays and from Surakarta every Monday, Thursday and Saturday.


"œWe are hoping that the opening of the two routes will increase tourist and business links between the three cities [sic]," he added.


The carrier currently flies to Singapore from six major cities in Indonesia: Jakarta, Bandung (West Java), Denpasar (Bali), Semarang (Central Java), Surabaya (East Java) and Yogyakarta.
