Ballina is a town located in the Northern River region in New South Wales, Australia. The city is about 205 km from Brisbane. The town crossed by the Pacific Highway is located at the mouth of the Richmond River near Cape Byron. Not only the natural beauty that you can enjoy in this city but also several of seafood in town that has a statue of the Big Prawn.

Ballina History

The origin of the word Ballina is not certain. Some argue that the city's name was adapted from a town in Ireland called Ballina. But there is also an opinion that Ballina derives from the Bullinah in Bundjalung language which means the place of various oyster. In 1928, the Southern Cross plane carrying Charles Kingsford Smiths crossed the coast at Ballina after traveling across the Pacific Ocean. It makes Ballina hold events related to the event throughout the 1970s and 1980s and the name of Southern Cross plane was used to name a school in East Ballina.

If you visit Ballina from June to November, do not miss the opportunity to see the hordes of whales migrating from Antarctica to the Great Barrier Reef. You can also interact directly with the local fauna such as kangaroos and feed them while trying different exciting attractions at the Macadamia Castle.
