The Aceh Darussalam Sultanate was born in the 14th century when Samudera Pasai Kingdom was on the verge of collapsing. The capital of the kingdom was in Kutaraja which is the forebear of Banda Aceh City.

The kingdom was formed upon the ruins of Hindhu and Buddhist kingdom led by Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah who successfully led the kingdom to glory. After Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah passed away, several kings tried to rule but fail. It was only Sultan Iskandar Muda who became the most glorious king of all. On December 28th 1962, Kutaraja changed the name into Banda Aceh.
