MERAUKE

Merauke is the largest district and located on the farthest eastern side of Indonesia. You can find Sabang-Merauke monument, the twin monument with one located in Sabang (Aceh province), in this district. The monument is also one destination in Merauke. There are still many tourism spots beside the monument in Merauke.

Things to see

One famous monument is Pepera Monument, a monument built to celebrate the integration of Irian Barat (Papua) into the Republic of Indonesia. Another one is Sabang-Merauke Monument, the twin monument like one in Sabang, located in Sota district. There's also LB Moerdani Monument built by Merauke Local Government to honor Major LB Moerdani who died in taking over Irian Barat (Papua) from Netherlands.

Things to do

One famous beach in Merauke is Lampu Satu beach, located 4 km away from the central of Merauke. At the beach, you can just walking around enjoying the horizon when sunset comes. Another one is Natsai Beach, usually known as dead beach, for there are no people or activities here at the beach though the beach itself is such a beauty. There's also Wasur National Park. In this national park, you can find kinds of rare flora and fauna found only in Papua like cassowary bird, cendrawasih (paradise bird) and soil kangaroo.

Things to eat

One typical food you can find in Merauke is papeda or sago porridge. This food is made of sago flour along with yellow broth made of tuna, turmeric and lime. Another one is jerked meat of Merauke made of venison mixed with spices. There's also calo dabu-dabu roasted fish typically from Merauke.
