Things to see
Visit the Sandakan Memorial Park which was once a Japanese prisoner of war prison. This place is a silent witness to the atrocities of World War II. There is a Chinese temple that you can visit in this city. The temple is named Puu Gih Jih and is on a hilltop. From the temple you can see the beautiful panorama of the Labuk Bay. You can also see a village called Buli Sim Sim where the majority of inhabitants built houses on the water. For other historical tour, you can visit Agnes Keith House and Museum, once the home of an author named Agnes Newton Keith, but now has become a museum. Or you can also visit St. Michael and All Angels Church which is the oldest stone building in Sabah.
Things to do
In this city, there lies Kinabatangan River which is the longest river in Sabah state. You can down along the Kinabatangan River while enjoying various fascinating ecosystems around this river. Visit the Botanical Gardens located not far from the Sepilok where you will gain interesting experience here. You can walk around the park, boating and even learn about palm oil and rainforest.
Things to eat
Sandakan has a variety of culinary dishes with fresh and tasty seafood cuisines. Various Malay cuisines which are the characteristic of Malaysia can also be found easily in the city, such as Nasi Lemak, Lemang and belacan. Shrimp crackers and dried shrimp snack could be an option as long as you are in this city. You can also bring home bleary-dried fish that makes you want to go back to Sandakan.
