Little India

In accordance to its name Little India, this area is dominated by Indian community with their unique culture and is open from 09.00 to 22.00. It is located on the east of Singapore River, across China Town and in the northern part of Kampong Glam, more specifically at Seragoon Rd

Little India is a shopping area which has an atmosphere of the 1920's. The construction and sanitation of Little India is quite different from other regencies in Singapore.

There are various kinds of special Indian merchandises like authentic Indian food, sari clothing to specific Indian handicrafts. At Serangon Road and its side-lanes are shops selling Ayuverdic massage lotion, gold, incense, and cloth of various kinds. It is the commercial area of Little India and a good place to get souvenirs. If you want to go for shopping don’t miss out on these famous shops:

  • Tekka Centre, known as KK. It is a wet market full of vegetables, fish, meat, spices and flowers.
  • Mustafa Centre, allthough it looks simple from the outside, Mustafa Centre has various kinds of household merchandises, ornaments, cloth, and complete Indian spices.

At Serangon Road you can find different kinds of specific Indian food. You can also buy package of ready made spices for Indian food.

To see a Hindu ritual you can visit Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, a temple dedicated to Goddess of Kali. Annually on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai, which usually falls in January or February there will be the Thaipusam festival in which men hook their bodies together and walk in procession. You can find other places of worship here such as: Foo Chow Methodist Church, Angullia Mosque and still many more.

Getting to Little India can be done on foot and by using MRT. You can also go by SMRT Link bus number 3, a free shuttle bus managed by SMRT. The free shuttle bus goes around for 8 – 15 minutes on holidays from Dhoby Ghanut MRT station to Little India.
