Borobudur

The Borobudur is located 15 km south of Mount Tidar or about 40 km north of Yogyakarta city. It is said that this temple was built by King Samaratungga, one of the kings of the old Mataram Kingdom and was the largest temple in the 9th century. Now it is still the largest Buddhist temple in the world.

This temple has 1460 relief panels and 504 stupas. The total height is around 42 meter before being renovated and 34.5 meter after the renovation.

The Borobudur shaped staircase has 10 levels. Each level represents the stages of human life.

The building itself consists of 4 levels. The first part is called Kamadhatu (symbolizing human beings that are still bound by lust), the second level is called Rupadhatu (symbolizing human beings that are free from lust but still care for appearance and form).

The third level is called Arupadhatu (symbolizing human beings that are not bound with lust, appearance and form), while the top is called Arupa (symbolizing Nirvana where the Buddha is residing).
