Tanjung Puting National Park

The Tanjung Puting National Park is located in Central Kalimantan Province. In 1936 the area was a 305,000 hectare wild animals conservation park. Then it was decided to be a national park with an additional 110,040 hectare. Now it consists of 300,040 hectare for Tanjung Puting Wild Animals Conservation area, 90,000 hectare productive forest and 25,000 hectare water area.

The Tanjung Puting National Park is huge, it is as large as Bali, and has several ecosystems such as tropical rain forest, low plain, dry land forest, fresh-water swamp forest, mangrove forest, beach forest and secondary forest. It is located at an elevation of 0-100 metres above sea level and is the home for many kinds of endemic (unique species only found in a certain place) and protected animals, such as orang utan, proboscis monkey (bekantan), red long-tailed monkey, bear, mouse deeer, and wildcat. There are also 200 kinds of bird, 38 kinds of mammal, other wild animals and some flora. Tanjung Puting National Park is the first rehabilitation area for orang utan.

The following list are some places you can visit in Tanjung Puting National Park

1. Tanjung Harapan (Cape of Good Hope): located in the secondary forest and swamp forest, this is the first station in the rehabilitation proses of orang utan. There is an information centre here, guest house and trail way.

2. Pondok Tanggui : a place where orang utan can be observed secretly without you coming into contact with any of them.

3. Lakey Camp: located in the primary forest and a place for half-wild to completely wild orang utan babies, from birth to 3 years old.

4. Natai Lengkuas: an observatory station by the river for proboscis monkey and other animals.

5. Bird Lake and Buluh River: an observatory place for birds, especially migratory birds.

It is adviced to come in June-September (dry reason) in order to be able to visit the whole Tanjung Puting National Park

Transport options Tanjung Puting National Park

From Pangkalan Bun (the capital of Kotawaringin district) you can head to Kumai which is 8 km away by public transportation taking 15 minutes. From there you can continue to Tanjung Puting National Park using traditional boat, called as 'klotok' for 2 hours. Speed boats are also available, cutting the journey to one hour but better take the slowboat if you are not in a hurry as it is a beautiful ride.
