About Philippine Airlines

Philippine Airlines, often abbreviated as PAL is the national airline and flag carrier of the Philippines. Founded in 1941 it is one of the oldest commercial airlines in Asia and Philippine Airlines was also the largest airline in Asia before the Asian Financial Crisis hit in 1997. The airline was severely hit: it had to drop almost all its routes and lay-off thousands of employees. Since a few years PAL is again rising from the ashes and is rapidly expanding its fleet and routes.

Philippine Airlines flies to over 58 destinations. Most Philippine Airlines flights are for destinations in Philippines but Philippine Airlines has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example China and Japan. From its main base in Manila 80 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Philippine Airlines tickets look for flights to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

Utiket is a good place to start looking for Philippine Airlines flights as we can compare all flights by Philippine Airlines with hundreds of other airlines and dozens of booking websites.

History Philippine Airlines

The national carrier of the Philippines, appropriately named Philippine Airlines, was founded in 1941 as Philippine Air Lines Inc. Before the 1997 Asian Financial crisis it was the largest airline in Asia. Its rapid growth and major purchases of new aircraft shortly before the crisis made it financially unstable and in 1998 it was on the brink of total collapse. A dispute with the airline and its employees about massive layoffs let to a full shutdown of Philippine Airlines operations in September 1998 for two weeks. After that it slowly restarted it flights but made major cuts to staff and destinations cutting all flights to Europe, Middle East, America and most domestic destinations.

After nine years (in 2008) Philippine Airlines finally managed to end their financial troubles and PAL could focus on growing again. The airline is gradually expanding its destinations and upgrading their fleet with purchases of Boeing 777, Airbus A321 and A330. The entry of San Miguel Corporation in 2012, which bought a 49% stake, helped PAL especially to modernize, renew their fleet and expand their network. In 2013 Philippine Airlines again began flying to Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Perth and London. All destinations it had to withdraw from in the midst of the crisis. Currently it flies to over 40 international destinations, including destinations in Europe, America, Australia and the Middle East.
