Things to see
Alor Setar has some fine musea and old colonial buildings. The Alor Setar City Art Center is a good example of the old colonial grandeur, and is a unique and beautiful blend of eastern and western architectural style. While you are at it, best to go inside as well where you can see various objects of Malaysian art. The Central Nobat Alor Setar is another unique building which has various orchestra instruments on display belonging to the Kedah Sultanate. For some history, you can visit the Kuala Kedah (Kuala Kedah Fort), State Museum, Diraja Kedah Museum (Kedah Royal Museum) and the Rice Museum.
Things to do
Alor Setar Tower is the second tallest tower in Malaysia after the KL Tower in Kuala Lumpur and the 19th largest in the world. You can get to the top of the tower and get a wide view on the beauty of Kedah state. Near the top is a rotating restaurant named Restoran Berputar Seri Angkasa. It's not cheap but it is a great experience to have your meal on this altitude while looking at the slowly changing, beautiful scenery.
A nice hiking trip to undertake is walking to the Seri Perigi Waterfall. The track takes you through dense jungle which will be bit exhausting but at the waterfall you can dive in the water and relax and enjoy.
Things to eat
A typical Kedah food and now popular throughout Southeast Asia is Nasi Lemak, made of rice, spicy sauces and with an egg and peanuts on the side. Best to try this of course where this dish originates. Asam laksa, or jackfruit curry is another typical Kedah dish you should have tried when you are here.
