Ujung Kulon National Park

The Ujung Kulon National Park (Taman Nasional Ujung Kulon, TNUK) located in Pandeglang, Banten about 150km southwest of Jakarta. It is is National Park rich in natural attractions with a variety of ecosystems, flora and fauna. A wide variety of plants and animals live here, one of which is the famous Javanese Rhino.

The Javanese Rhina have an area of 122 956 hectares for their habitat. There are only 50 or 60 Javanese Rhinos left in the Park. The Rhino is listed as an endangered species which makes this park important as a nature reserve and one of the world's natural heritage sites protected by UNESCO.

Besides the Javanese Rhinoceros, the Park is the home for three ecosystems: marine, marsh and land inhabited by a variety of animals and plants, some of them rare animals and plants.

There are several famous beautiful locations in this are: Peucang Island, Handeleum Island, Panaitan Island, Mount Honje and Semanjang Ujung Kulon. In these places you can go trekking, camping, wildlife spotting, diving, snorkeling, swimming, surfing, cultural tours in fishing village, and jump in one of the hot springs. To get access to these spots you need to pay Rp. 10k-50k each if you are Indonesian and about Rp. 30k-75k each if you are a foreigner.

General admission fee for the Park is Rp. 2500, -Indonesian citizens and Rp. 20,000, for foreigners plus an insurance fee of Rp. 3000, -. Naturally, while visiting the TNUK you are forbidden to hunt, capture, cut, set things on fire or do any other things that may disrupt the lives of flora and fauna. As the famous saying goes: take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints.

Getting to The Ujung Kulon National Park is quite easy from Jakarta. You can use public transportation from Jakarta to Labuan which takes about 4-6 hours at a cost of about Rp. 30.000, -. At Labuan you can continue the journey to the National Park by using hi-speed boats departing from Carita with a capacity of 8 people and a rental rate of Rp. 4.500.000, -/day or alternatively you can use a normal boat that depart from Sumur or Tamanjaya with a capacity of 20 people and a rental rate of Rp. 2.250.000, -/day. You can wait for other people and share the costs.
