There area beaches in Indonesia which are not free to visit. That is the bad news, but unfortunaly true for Nihiwatu beach. The 2.5 km long white sand beach is one of ten best surf spots in Asia. The waves here are called Left God Waves.
The beach is located around 30 km south from Waikabubak on Sumba island and is managed by the Nihiwatu Resort. This resort does not allow you access to the beach, acces is only allowed if you stay at the resort.
The resort has villas with three spacious bedrooms build on a hill facing the Indian Ocean complete with private swimming pool. Architecture ornaments in this resort are a combination of traditional and modern style. In 2012, this resort is the second winner of the best hotel in Indonesia form TripAdvisor. The owners of the resort are foreigners, but all employees are local people and they make sure the beach and all facilities are clean and tidy.
You must be prepared to spend some cash to stay here, a night here would cost approximately five million rupiah with a minimum of five nights. But then you can not only enjoy the beach and the facilities but also the waves. Be aware that only ten surfers are allowed due to safety.
The best time for visit Nihiwatu Resort is between April until December. Nihiwatu resort is closed in Januari and Februari.
Transport options Nihiwatu beach
You can fly with Aviastar, Transnusa, Wings Air or Merpati form Ngurah Rai airport in Denpasar to Tambolaka airport. Form Tambolaka airport somebody from the resort will pick you up by car.
