The new and modern Mandalay International Airport opened in 17th September 2000 and is one of the few international airports of Myanmar (Burma).
The airport is located 45 km south of central Mandalay and for some reason has the longest runway in Southeast Asia. The airport is fairly small though with one terminal and just over 1 million passengers a year but it has all facilities like ATMs, restaurant, currency exchange, travel agencies and even a post office.
Mandalay International Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Mandalay International Airport, most of these are operated by Myanmar Airways. Many people take a flight to Chiang Mai and transfer to another flight there.
There is not any public transport available at Mandalay Airport. But AirAsia and Golden Myanmar Airlines offer a free shuttle bus to and from the airport if you can show them your ticket. Otherwise you are stuck with taxis. Although the airport is far away (45 km) taxis are quite affordable. Expect to pay about US $ 15 for a ride into the city (an hour or more).
