Barcelona El Prat International Airport is located 12 km southwest of Barcelona city center and is the second largest Spanish airport and seventh busiest airport in Europe. The airport is a large hub for low-cost airlines like Vueling and Ryanair and also a main hub for Iberia. Although there are intercontinental flights to the America's and Asia, most flights are European mainly due to the growth of low-cost airlines: Vueling and Ryanair together count for almost half of all passenger traffic.
Most flights from Barcelona–El Prat Airport are to Amsterdam and to Rome but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by Vueling. Every day there are flights to 20 destinations from Barcelona–El Prat Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
The airport has three runways and two terminals. The old Terminal 2, with a part dating back to 1968, is now the de facto low-cost terminal, although not airlines here are low-cost airlines. EasyJet uses section 2C while 2B is used by Ryanair and Transavia.
Terminal 1 is the fifth largest terminal in the world and capable of wide-body aircraft like the B747 and A380. This terminal opened in 2009 and handles most of the air traffic. The terminal is split into five modules: Module A is for flights to Madrid; Module B for Schengen flights; Module C for Air Nostrum flights; Module D for Non-Schengen European flights; and Module E for all other international traffic. The terminals are 7 km apart and a free Shuttle Bus (departs every 6 minutes, travel time 12 minutes) travels between the terminals.
