History Lion Air

Lion Air is privately-owned and one of the most popular airlines in Indonesia with both domestic and international flights. It challenges the government-owned flag carrier Garuda Indonesia with a low-cost model using brand-new Boeing 737-900ER. It all began with a dream of two brothers named Kusnan and Rusdi Kirana who started operations in June 2000 with a single leased Boeing for flights between Jakarta and Pontianak. Before, the two brothers operated a succesfull travel agency and with an investment of $100.000 they started Lion Air. One of the brothers designed the logo and cabin crew uniform to save cost; these are still in use today. It was the first low-cost airline in Indonesia, it was therefore in a unique position which insured a tremoundous growth culminating in setting in 2011 the world record for the largest airplane order to date: 230 aircraft from Boeing. The deal is also the largest commercial aircraft order ever in money terms in Boeing's history. Althought huge for Boeing, for Lion it was not enough. Just over a year later Lion Air placed another order for 234 A320 aircrafts with Airbus setting a new record for largest order at catalogue prices at $24 billion. Lion Air is now part of Lion Group. Several subsidiary airlines have been set up beginning with Wings Air in 2003, a regional airline using turboprop aircraft on lower density routes. Recently the Lion Group has expanded rapidly with Malindo Air (Malaysia) in 2012, Thai Lion Air (Thailand) in 2013 and Batik Air (full-service carrier in Indonesia) also in 2013.
