Luqa is a historically significant town in southern Malta, established as an independent parish in 1634. It is primarily distinguished for hosting the Malta International Airport, a site that served as a critical RAF base and suffered extensive bombardment during World War II. Architecturally, the town features the impressive Baroque Parish Church of St. Andrew. An interesting etymological theory suggests the name "Luqa" derives from the Aramaic word for poplar trees. Despite its modern aviation importance, the town retains a traditional Maltese character.
