The New Chitose Airport is Japan's third busiest airport after Narita and Haneda. The route between Haneda and Chitose is the busiest air route in the world with dozens of jumbo jets flying between the cities.
The airport has two semicircular terminals, one for domestic and one for international flights. The New Chitose Airport opened in 1991 and replaces the nearby Chitose Airport which is now used as an air force base only; all commercial flights have moved to the New Chitose Airport.
The airport is mostly used for domestic flights but there are a few international flights as well, mostly to China, Korea and Taiwan.
