Palma de Mallorca Airport is an international airport near the capital Palma on the island Majorca, part of the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Majorca is a major tourist destination and the Palma de Mallorca Airport handles on a busy day in the summer almost as much aircraft as Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport. During the winter though, most of the terminals are closed.
Most flights from Palma de Mallorca Airport are to Barcelona and to Madrid but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by Vueling. Every day there are flights to 15 destinations from Palma de Mallorca Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
Palma de Mallorca Airport has seen a steady growth of passengers since the 1960s, only interrupted by the slack in tourism after the September 11 terrorist attacks and the financial crisis in 2008. Every decade a new terminal had to be build to handle the increase in tourists coming to Majorca so that the airport basically had 4 terminals. In the latest construction phase these were connected to each other creating one large terminal. The old terminals are now called Modules.
Module C is the largest and most recent and was partly renovated in 2010. It is used for flights to Schengen destinations by Air Berlin, Niki and EasyJet. It is the only part of the terminal which is opened all year. Module A (flights to non-Schengen destinations), Module B (domestic and regional flights) and Module D (European destinations) are all closed in winter.
The Airport is located just 8 km east of Palma.
