Sibu Airport serves Sibu, in the state Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo. The current airport began operation in June 1994 as the old airport was demolished to give space to developing Sibu.
The airport is a major hub in the region with daily flights to Peninsular Malaysia (KL and Johor Bahru) as well as to other cities in Malaysian Borneo (Kuching and Kota Kinabalu. The airport got a major upgrade in September 2012.
Sibu Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Sibu Airport, most of these are operated by AirAsia. Many people take a flight to Kuala Lumpur and transfer to another flight there.
In August 2012, the new terminal, which can accommodate up to 1.8 million passengers annually, was opened to cater to the increasing number of business and leisure passengers to Sibu.
The airport is located 20 km east of central Sibu, close to the new Sibu Jaya Township, about a half hour by car.
There is no public bus running between the airport and the city which leaves taxis as the only means of getting into town. Coupon taxi fares to Sibu are RM 45.
