Although its name would suggest otherwise China Airlines is not based in mainland China but in Taiwan, also known as the Republic of China. China Airlines is the flag carrier of Taiwan and has its headquarter and main base at Taipei Taoyuan International airport.
China Airlines started operating in 1959 with charter flights using two aircrafts. It soon started with scheduled domestic flights and its first international flight to Saigon (Vietnam) in 1966. The arrival of Boeing 747 Jumbojet in the '70 allowed it to operate on the highly profitable trans-pacific route and on the route to Hong Kong.
The political problems between Taiwan and mainland China posed great problems for the airlines as for example China did not allow the Taiwanese airline to fly to several countries, Japan and Australia for example, for quite some time. On the other hand the lack of direct flights between China and Taiwan meant that travelers between the two countries had to fly to then British-controlled Hong Kong and switch to another carrier. The route Taipei to Hong Kong became the busiest route worldwide with up to 17 return flights a day and highly profitable. An agreement between the Chinese and Taiwanese government has made direct flights finally possible since 2010.
