About Emirates

Emirates is an airlines based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Emirates was formed in 1985 by the Dubai government after Gulf Air reduced their flights to Dubai. With backing and help from Pakistan International Airlines with aircraft, administration and technical services, Emirates was set up. The first flight was from Dubai to Karachi.

Emirates has grown tremendously in these three decades and is now one of the largest airlines in the world. It is also the largest user of Airbus A380 superjumbo's (95 aircraft) and Boeing 777 (131 aircraft) with more to be delivered in the next years. It is one of the few airlines in the world who has a complete wide-body fleet; it does not use the A320 or B737 which are so common with low-cost airlines everywhere. Emirates was also the first airline to offer individual screens in the Economy Class; before, that was a luxury only for Business Class. Many thought at the time it would be to costly but it became so popular with passengers that soon other airlines had to quickly upgrade their Economy class seats as this became the new standard.

With its hub at Dubai Airport Emirates can connect Europe and the America's with Asia and Africa, a role played before very successfully by European airlines like Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France. The growth of Emirates has caused concerns at these large European airlines. Emirates is being accused of government help and subsidies but the succes of Emirates is mostly explained by a modern and efficient fleet, cheap staff (older airlines have huge pension obligations) and a focus on customer satisfaction.

Emirates flies to over 125 destinations. Most Emirates flights are for destinations in United States but Emirates has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example India and Australia. From its main base in Dubai 108 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Emirates tickets look for flights to Singapore and Bangkok.

Utiket is a good place to start looking for Emirates flights as we can compare all flights by Emirates with hundreds of other airlines and dozens of booking websites.

Rules and information for Emirates

Checked and hand Baggage allowance

Emirates has a Cabin baggage or hand luggage allowance for Economy Class of one piece of maximum 7 kg with dimensions of 55x38x20cm. For Business and First Class you are allowed to bring two pieces of each 7 kg, but one of these should not be larger than a handbag.

For checked baggage the rules differ with route and type of ticket issued. To summarize: Economy Class passengers may bring 30 kg of checked baggage, except the Special fare type which may bring 20 kg. Business Class passengers may bring 40 kg and First Class passengers 50 kg of checked baggage. Multiple baggage are allowed for all Classes, but total weight may not exceed these limits.

If you travel to or from the America's different rules apply: Economy Class passengers may then bring two bags of 23 kg each while Business and First class passengers may bring 32 kg of checked baggage. If your flight starts in Africa also different rules apply depending on the country, best to check the Emirates website for details.

Cancellations, name changes and refunds

It is possible to change an existing booking with Emirates. You are allowed to cancel your booking or change your flight to a different date or time. You can easily do this on the Emirates website but be aware that changes you make are for all the passengers in the booking. If you need to change the data for one person you need to contact the local Emirates office. For all changes and cancellations there are most likely fees which have to be paid before the change will take effect. The amount of the fee depends on the type of ticket you have bought.
