About Invercargill Airport

Invercargill

Invercargill Airport is a medium-sized airport with about 300.000 passengers. The airport is located just 2 km west of the city center on what formerly was a tidal estuary lake. Construction of the airport began in 1936 with draining and stabilizing of land, this took several years. Even now flooding is a thread and continual draining still needs to be carried out. In the decades after the War the airport slowly expanded and experienced a steady growth. The runway was increased in many steps to be the third longest in the country capable of handling Boeing 737 jet aircraft. Presently most aircraft at Invercargill Airport are turboprops though, as these allow for a higher frequency of departure (eight a day for turboprops and three for jets).
