Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport has two main terminals located 4 km apart (20 minutes by shuttle bus). The Terminal 1 is used solely for domestic flights while the brand-new Terminal 2 is for international flights only. Terminal 1 is in fact made of three separate structures. Terminal 1A opened in 1992 and is used (for domestic flights) by GoAir and Air India. Terminal 1B is the old terminal but upgraded several times, this terminal is used for all other domestic flight. The 1C building is for offices, food court and departure lounges.
Terminal 2 (T2) opened in January 2014. Costing US $ 1.6 billion to build the T2 terminal is huge with 192 check-in counter, 75 elevators and allows for simultaneously docking of 48 aircraft. The T2 Terminal handles all international flight for all carriers.

How to get from the airport to Mumbai city centre by public transport?

Public transport is available but you would first need to get on a bus to get to one of the train stations. Several buses operated by BEST pass through the two terminals: bus line 312 passes terminal 1 on the route from Vile Parle to Andheri railway stations. At T2, line 321 goes to Vile Parle Station and 308 will go to Andheri railway station.
From both stations you can connect to the extensive Mumbai Suburban Railway Network.

How much does a taxi cost from the airport to Mumbai city centre?

A taxi for the 25 km ride into the city should cost about Rs 500 to 600. Best to book a prepaid taxi at the official booth; there are many booths offering taxis when you exit the arrival area, just check each and pick the cheapest. There are metered taxis available but use this only if you are familiar in Mumbai; the driver may take a scenic route and detours causing the metered taxi to become a lot more expensive than a prepaid one.
