Warsaw Chopin Airport is the largest Polish airport with connections to the main European cities as well as to domestic cities like Gdansk, Krakow and Wroclaw. The airport was named Warsaw-Okecie Airport until 2001 in which year it was renamed in honor of Polish composer Frederic Chopin. The former name Okecie is still used sometimes.
The airport was opened in 1934 but was destroyed when the Germans invaded Poland. During the war the German repaired the airport and build the first concrete runway but, at the end of the war, when the Soviets were approaching Warsaw, the Germans destroyed the runway and all the buildings before they left. It took several years to repair the runway and build new terminals but by the end of the 1940s the airport had flights to the main Polish cities and several international destinations by the new LOT Polish Airlines.
Most flights from Warsaw Chopin Airport are to Munich and to Frankfurt but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by LOT Polish Airlines. Every day there are flights to 16 destinations from Warsaw Chopin Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
The airport now has two runways and one terminal designated Terminal A which is in fact made of two Terminals which are now connected with each other. The former Terminal 1 was build just after the fall of communism in 1989. Terminal 2 was opened in 2006 as the airport was growing strongly and was reaching maximum capacity. Recently, in 2011, both terminals were merged into one Terminal A complex with five check-in areas in two main halls, the South hall (former Terminal 1) and North hall (formerly Terminal 2).
Warsaw Chopin Airport is located about 10 km south of Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
