The Whakatane Airport is a small airport serving Whakatane and is used by tourists to visit the nearby attractions like Mount Tarawera and White Island. The airport is located about 4km northeast of the town. Air Chatham has daily flights to Auckland while Sunair has daily return flights to Gisborne and Hamilton. Both airlines use turboprops due to the short runway.
