Air France is the national airline of France and a subsidiary of the Air France-KLM group. It was formed in 1933 with the merger of five French airlines. After the Second World War all air transport, including Air France, was nationalized by the French Government but it gave Air France the management over the complete French air network, making Air France a state company and granting it a monopoly. By the 1980's Air France had grown to a fleet of 100 aircraft (including 33 jumbojets) and served 150 destinations making it the fourth-largest passenger airline in the world. The last decade has been difficult for Air France, decline has set in. It faces increased competition from low-cost airlines (Ryanair and EasyJet) on European routes and from Emirates and Etihad on the lucrative intercontinental routes to Africa and Asia. It still operates many routes to former French Colonies in Africa and the Pacific but these are hardly profitable. The airline has only recently made a profit again, helped by lower fuel costs.
Air France operates a fleet of more than 200 aircraft, most of them Airbus (which is a French company as well), but recently they have bought the new Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner as well. Air France was the launch (first) customer of the A380 Superjumbo in 2009.
Air France flies to over 143 destinations. Most Air France flights are for destinations in United States but Air France has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example France and Spain. From its main base in Paris 61 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Air France tickets look for flights to Amsterdam and Washington.
