PAL Express is the answer of Philippine Airlines to the increased competition by Cebu Pacific Air. PAL Express uses the Centennial Terminal (Terminal 2) for all international flights and domestic flights to and from Bacolod, Cebu, Davao, General Santos, Iloilo, Laoag, Saipan and Tagbilaran. All other PAL Express domestic flights depart and arrive at Terminal 3.
The airline came to life in 1995 as Air Philippines which began its maiden flight in February 1996 with a Boeing 737-200 between Zamboanga, Iloilo and Subic Bay. That same year Air Philippines increased its fleet size with another six aircraft. Passenger numbers soared to a million in a few years. Air Philippines ceased operations due to heavy losses in 2008 and was acquired by the the owners of Philippine Airlines.
Meanwhile, Philippine Airlines launched PAL Express in 2008 for regional and secondary routes to smaller airports but the next year all flights were transferred to Air Philippines which was re-branded as Airphil Express. However, in 2013 this was reversed and the name returned to PAL Express while the business name stayed Air Philippines Corporation. A corporate deal between the two companies in March 2014 resulted in a strategy to harmonize the two airlines to make them more competitive. So, although PAL Express is a different company and not owned by Philippine Airlines, PAL Express uses the brandname, website and even the IATA code of their sister company. Currently PAL Express is the third largest Philippines-based airline, after Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines with a market share of around 20%.
