Bali's airport Ngurah Rai is named after I Gusti Ngurah Rai, an Indonesian National Hero who died in a puputan (fight to the death) against the Dutch at Marga during the Indonesian Revolution in 1946. The airport has undergone some major renovations lately significantly improving the congestion and facilities.
Most flights from Ngurah Rai International Airport are to Jakarta and to Kuala Lumpur but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by Garuda Indonesia. Every day there are flights to 20 destinations from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
The airport has one runway and two passenger terminals: one for domestic and one for international flights. The airport has been recently completely reconstructed and facilities has been improved a lot but be prepared to wait a lot at immigration, especially in the holiday season.
Bali's airport Ngurah Rai is located in the south of the island, about 15 km south of Denpasar and only 4 km south from Kuta.
Most people opt for a taxi but there are some public transport options at Bali Airport but you would need to walk a few minutes to the main street where you can flag down a bemo (local minivan). Most of the bemos in this area will be heading to Kuta and be prepared for a hot, crowded journey.
You can also opt for the Ojek (motorcycle taxi) which are waiting also outside the airport. Ride to Kuta should cost about Rp. 25.000
Especially at night, transport options are limited, but the distance to Kuta is just a few kilometers so you could even walk it. Be sure to have a map though because you need to make a few turns but the road is busy and well lit.
For taxies go to the ticketing booth just after exiting the terminal, buy a fixed-fare ticket and a driver will be assigned to you. When you are on a budget, you can flag down a taxi from outside the airport and use the meter. If you are a girl, or traveling alone do take a Blue Bird Taxis as they are safe and reliable.
Here are some fixed prices from the airport to several destinations in Bali (in Rupiah):
