Air India is the national airline and the third largest airline of India (after IndiGo and Jet Airways). Air India was founded in 1932 by J.R.D. Tata, a business tycoon and aviator, who also piloted its first flight from Karachi to Bombay. After independence in 1948 the government of India purchased a majority stake in the airline, domestic flights were transferred to Indian Airlines while Air India would concentrate on long-haul international flights.
A difficult period started in the early 2000 after international air traffic slumped and Air India faced increased competition from low-cost airlines. In 2004 Air India launched its own low-cost airlines: AirIndia Express but that was never able to gain much market share. Few years later the airline merged with Indian Airlines to create one large national airline but financially this was a disaster: losses grew to over $1 billion in 2009 and Air India had in 2011 over $6 billion in debt. Airplanes were sold, routes cancelled and with massive government support Air India was able to survive and posted a small operating profit in 2013. Since then market share has gone up as well.
Air India operates a fleet of over 100 aircraft, the majority Airbus A320 series used for short-haul flights and Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliners for long-haul, international flights.
Air India flies to over 111 destinations. Most Air India flights are for destinations in India but Air India has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example United States and Saudi Arabia. From its main base in Delhi 124 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Air India tickets look for flights to Mumbai and Bangalore.

Air India allows all passengers to bring one bag of 8 kg in to the cabin with a maximum dimensions of 55 x 35 x 25 cm. You are also allowed to bring one small extra personal item like a small hand-bag or laptop.
The Air India baggage policy for checked baggage is more complicated. For domestic flights Air India allows Economy Class passengers to bring 25 kilo and Business Class 35 kilo. For international flights it depends on the route. Typically Economy Class passengers can check-in one bag of max 23 kilo but there are many exceptions where the maximum is much higher.
