Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commonly known as simply Lufthansa, is the national airline of Germany and combined with its subsidiaries it is the second-largest airline in Europe based on passengers carried. Lufthansa has a turbulent history and the current company is in fact a different Lufthansa then the Lufthansa which started flying in 1926. That company was shut down after the Nazi defeat and the end of the Second World War. A new airline, Luftag, was formed 8 years after the war but West-Germany did not have sovereignty over its own airspace yet. Many of the staff of the new airline worked for the old Lufthansa and later the airline bought the name and logo of the old Lufthansa. In 1955 the new Lufthansa got approval to start flying and soon it was linking the major German cities with each other and foreign capitals. Due to the unique status of Berlin Lufthansa was not allowed to fly to either part of that city until the Berlin Wall fell in 1989.
Besides Lufthansa, the Lufthansa Group now consists of several airlines which the company bought in the last decades: Austrian Airlines, Swiss International, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and Germanwings.
Lufthansa has a fleet of more than 260 aircraft making it the largest airline in Europe based on fleet size. Traditionally, Lufthansa is a major customer of Airbus (as many Airbus aircraft are manufactured in Germany) and the core of its fleet is made of A320-200 and A321-200. Lufthansa also operates 34 of the four-engine Airbus A340 and 14 Superjumbo's (A380). The only Boeing aircraft Lufthansa operates now are 747's but Lufthansa did place an order by 34 B777-900 aircraft to be delivered starting 2020.
Lufthansa flies to over 203 destinations. Most Lufthansa flights are for destinations in United States but Lufthansa has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example Germany and Spain. From its main base in Frankfurt 162 flights depart every week. Many people who look for Lufthansa tickets look for flights to Munich and Amsterdam.
