Munich Airport is a large international airport serving Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria in Germany. With over 42 million passengers a year, Munich Airport is the second largest airport in Germany, after Frankfurt Airport, and is a major hub for Lufthansa and Lufthansa Regional. Although Lufthansa has its base at Frankfurt, the airline has more flights from Munich to European destinations, while Frankfurt has more intercontinental flights. The airport was voted best European Airport eight times in the last ten years.
The airport replaced the old Munich-Riem Airport which was unable to expand. The decision to build a new airport was taken in 1969 but construction started not sooner than 1980 and only in 1992 the airport commenced operations and the old airport closed.
Most flights from Munich Airport are to Amsterdam and to Paris but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by Lufthansa. Every day there are flights to 20 destinations from Munich Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
Munich Airport has two runways, two terminals, extensive maintenance facilities and can handle wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380. Terminal 1 is the older one and is divided in 5 modules A till E. Modules A and D are for flights within the Schengen area while B and C are for flights outside it. Module E is for arrivals only. Terminal 2 opened in 2003 and unlike Terminal 1 it has a central Plaza where all facilities are located for departing and arriving passengers, much easier for transfers. All flights from Lufthansa and its Star Alliance members depart and arrive at Terminal 2 while all other airlines are based in Terminal 1. Both terminals are connected by the Munich Airport Center, a central shopping and recreation area.
Munich Airport is located about 30 km northeast of Munich.
Best way to get into the city is by train. Munich Airport is connected to the city by S-Bahn lines S1 and S8. The Airport station is located underground between the terminals at the Munich Airport Center. The trains operate whole day, except for few hours in the night and depart every 10 minutes. The ride to Munich Haubtbahnhof (Central Station) will take about 45 minutes and cost €11.20 for one-way ticket but day-passes are available as well.
There is also an airport bus run by Lufthansa which drives between the Munich Haubtbahnhof and the airport (one-way ticket € 10.50).
