The Vienna International Airport or, in German, Flughaven Wien-Schwechat, is Austria's largest airport and is located about 19 km southeast of downtown Vienna. Vienna International Airport is the main base for Austrian Airlines and a hub for Eurowings and Niki. With over 20 million passengers a year it is just outside the top-20 of busiest European airports. The airport was originally built as a military airport in 1938 but replaced Aspern as Vienna's main airport in 1954. After that several large construction projects were carried out to keep up with the increasing number of passengers.
Most flights from International Airport are to Frankfurt and to Zurich but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by Austrian Airlines. Every day there are flights to 20 destinations from International Airport . Here are the most popular destinations:
Currently Vienna Airport has two runways and four terminals. The four terminals are named Terminal 1, 2, 3 and 1A. The first three are built next to each other while 1A is located opposite Terminal 1.
The Terminal 1 is used by Air Berlin, Niki and other oneworld and SkyTeam airlines. Terminal 2 is currently closed. Terminal 3 is used by Austrian Airlines Group and Star Alliance members, including Emirates and Qatar Airways. The 1A Terminal only has check-in facilities for low-cost airlines.

The Vienna International Airport has its own railway station where two different trains depart to the city center (Wien-Mitte station). You can either take the S-Bahn (commuter rail) which is the cheapest option (€ 3.70), departs every half hour (except during the night) and takes about 25 minutes. The faster City Airport Train is a non-stop train to Wien-Mitte Station. It departs every half hour as well, takes 16 minutes and costs € 12.
The Vienna AirportLines Bus operates direct buses between the airport and several popular destinations inside Vienna and is therefor a good alternative for the trains. Buses depart just outside the arrival hall every half hour, even in the night and takes 20 to 45 minutes depending your destination. Tickets can be bought from the operator for € 8 for one-way ticket.
