The Wattay airport is one of the few international airports of Laos and it offers flights to many of the major cities in the Southeast Asia.
International flights to Vientiane can be expensive and it can be a good option to fly to nearby Udon Thani in Thailand and take a bus to the border.
Wattay International Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Wattay International Airport, most of these are operated by Lao Airlines. Many people take a flight to Bangkok and transfer to another flight there.
The airport has two terminals, a smaller domestic one used by Laos Airlines, Lao Air and Lao Central Airlines, and a larger, recently upgraded, international terminal. The airport has all basic facilities like ATM's, shops, restaurants and currency exchange.
The Wattay International Airport of Vientiane is located just 4 km west of the city center.
You can take one of the tuk-tuks which, after negotioation should cost about 30.000 kip ($ 3.50). If you are on a budget there is the option to walk to the main road (500 meters) and take a local bus for less than $ 1.
Taxis to your destination in Vientiane can be booked at the taxi booth inside the arrival hall for just US$ 7.
