About United Airlines

United Airlines, or often just called United, is the third-largest airline in the world after Delta and American Airlines, based on revenue. United was formed in 1934 after United Aircraft and Transport Corporation (UATC), founded in 1927 by William Boeing, was forced by the US government to break-up in different parts because UATC was an aircraft manufacturer and an airline. All manufacturing east of the Mississippi became United Aircraft (later United Technologies), while the manufacturing west of the river became Boeing Airplane Company. All airlines interests were combined in United Air Lines.

United saw a huge increase in passengers due to the economic boom after the Second World War which lasted till the '70s. United operated in those years (1953-1970) men-only flights which were forbidden for women and children (except female flight attendances). Passengers were allowed to smoke, got free cigars and a steak dinner.

In 1985 United bought the entire Pacific Division of Pan Am, an ailing competing airline, and few years later the routes to Heathrow Airport. But competition from low-cost airlines led to losses in the '90s. The losses multiplied after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the WTC and Pentagon. People were afraid to fly and United reported a net loss the next year of over 2 billion dollars. If filed for bankruptcy and only after huge loans and the loss of thousands of employees it was able to emerge from bankruptcy five years later. In 2011 United merged with Continental forming the then largest airline in the world.

United has a fleet of over 700 aircraft, the majority Boeings.

United Airlines flies to over 194 destinations. Most United Airlines flights are for destinations in United States but United Airlines has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example Canada and Japan. From its main base in San Francisco 128 flights depart every week. Many people who look for United Airlines tickets look for flights to New York and Los Angeles.

Utiket is a good place to start looking for United Airlines flights as we can compare all flights by United Airlines with hundreds of other airlines and dozens of booking websites.

Cancellations, name changes and refunds

United has a 24 hour flexible booking policy which means that you can ask for a free refund if you do this within 24 hours after booking and if your flight is at least 7 days in the future. In other circumstances you need to pay a fee to cancel or change your flight. The fees depend highly on the type of ticket and fare you purchased.

Name changes are not allowed but exceptions are made in case you made a typo. Best to contact the airline directly.
