The fairly new airport in Macau was opened in 1995. Before that Macau only had an airport which could handle small airplanes. Macau International Airport has become a popular destination for low-cost airlines because of the low landing fees.
This, combined with Macau's unique cultural heritage, the gambling industry and close proximity to Hong Kong have seen an enormous rise in passenger numbers.
Be aware that Macau is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China having it own immigration policies and a Macau visa does not allow you to enter China or Hong Kong. Macau allows a 30 to 90 day visa-free entry for most passport holders.
Macau International Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Macau International Airport, most of these are operated by Air Macau. Many people take a flight to Shanghai and transfer to another flight there.
