The beautiful resort island Hamilton (inhabitants about 1200) on the east coast of Australia is the only island in the Great Barrier Reef with its own commercial airport, the Hamilton Island Airport or also known as Great Barrier Reef Airport.
The Hamilton island is a privately owned resort island and thus most people flying to here are tourists although recently Hamilton Island has seen a major increase in its inhabitants, both employees and retiring people who come here for the lifestyle.
Hamilton Island Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Hamilton Island Airport , most of these are operated by Virgin Australia. Many people take a flight to Brisbane and transfer to another flight there.
Hamilton Island Airport is located in the southwest corner of Hamilanton Island, the largest inhabited island of the Whitsunday Islands Group (roughly 2 by 2 km).
A free shuttle bus awaits you for transfer to the Reef View Hotel, Palm Bungalows or Whitsunday Holiday Apartments. If you have booked a package in advance it may include your own golf buggy which you can pick up the reception counter.
On the island itself a free shuttle bus operates between all the hotels and major tourist spots.
