The Gran Canaria Airport, or sometimes called Gando Airport is an important airport in the Canary Islands for passengers as well as freight, and is with over 10 million passengers a year the 5th busiest airport in Spain.
Most of the traffic at Gran Canaria Airport is international, mostly tourists from the northern European Countries, like the UK, Germany and Holland. The airport serves as a base for several airlines, among others: Ryanair, Binter Canaries and CanaryFly. It has two runways and one, new terminal. Nearby Gando Air Base is one of the largest air bases of the Spanish Air Force sharing some of the structures, the runways for example, with the civilian airport.
Gran Canaria Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Gran Canaria Airport, most of these are operated by TUIfly. Many people take a flight to Eindhoven and transfer to another flight there.

The airport played a role in the worst airline disaster in history in 1977. A bomb exploded at a shop in the terminal on 27 March 1977, consequently the terminal was closed and flights diverted to the smaller Los Rodeos Airport on nearby Tenerife. Here, due to congestion, delays and miscommunication two Boeings 747 collided on the runway resulting in the deaths of 583 people.
The Gran Canaria Airport is located on the eastern part of the island of Gran Canaria about 20 km south of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Most popular tourist destinations are easily reachable by bus. Several local bus lines depart from the bus stop outside the terminal for destinations on the coast. Journey time is about 45 minutes and a one-way ticket cost about 4 euro. Departures are frequent, but less in the weekend and evening. During the night the buses do not operate.

Although there are local buses connecting the airport to several cities on the island, most people opt for a taxi. Taxis are waiting outside the arrival area and the fare to for example Las Palmas would be around 35 euro, expect to pay at least 45 euro for a destination on the southern coast.
