The KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, or Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij is the national airline of the Netherlands and one of the oldest airlines in the world still operating under its original name. KLM was founded in 1919 and its first flight was a year later from London to Amsterdam carrying two journalists and some newspapers. That year KLM carried a total of 440 passengers. A few years later KLM started their first intercontinental flight to Jakarta using a Fokker aircraft capable of carrying 12 people. In 1930 total passengers carried had already risen to 15,143 passengers.
After the Second World War KLM had to rebuild its network and acquire new aircraft. After just a few years most services were resumed and the airline could add many new destinations. The onset of the jet age and the oil crisis in the '70 pushed KLM into a crisis and the government nationalized the airline. With government backing it was able to grow and became a major player on the transatlantic routes and with a large European and Asian network. It acquired a 25% stake in Northwest Airlines and a 26% of Kenya Airways. Still, with a small home market, KLM was financially struggling and in 2003 it merged with Air France.
KLM operates a fleet of more than 100 aircraft, most of them wide-body aircraft. It used to be a major customer of the Boeing 747 but now only has 16 jumbojets left; most of these aircraft have been replaced by Boeing 777 and Airbus A330.
KLM flies to over 189 destinations. Most KLM flights are for destinations in United States but KLM has international flights to several other countries as well, like for example Germany and United Kingdom. From its main base in Amsterdam 230 flights depart every week. Many people who look for KLM tickets look for flights to Copenhagen and London.
