Although this airport is officially named Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport, it is better known but its shorter name Rome Fiumicino Airport. This airport is the largest airport in Italy and serves the capital of Rome. With well over 40 million passengers a year Rome Fiumicino is one of the busiest airports in Europe. The airport is the home of the national airline Alitalia, responsible for about 50% of flights, and is a large hub for Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling.
The Fiumicino Airport replaces the old Rome Ciampino Airport, which is still in use today for low-cost airlines. Operations at Fiumicino started in 1960 just in time for the Summer Olympics held in Italy that year. The airport is named after one of the most famous Italians, the painter, inventor and mathematician Leonardo da Vinci, who designed a flying machine and helicopter as early as 1480.
Most flights from Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport are to Munich and to Amsterdam but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by Alitalia. Every day there are flights to 20 destinations from Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
Rome Fiumicino has four terminals which were all fairly recently upgraded. Terminal 1 is used by Alitalia for short-haul flights, Air France and KLM and some smaller airlines. Terminal 2 is mainly used by low-cost airlines like easyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air except Vueling which uses Terminal 3 together with Alitalia for long-haul flights and several others airlines. Terminal 5 is used by all US carriers and El-Al Airlines.
Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino International Airport is located 40 km west of Rome's city center.
The Rome Fiumicino has its own train station from where two lines depart to Rome. The Leonardo Express leaves every 30 minutes to Rome Central Station (Termini), the ride takes 35 minutes and a one-way ticket cost € 14 which can be booked online. Also the FL1 line will take you into Rome but not to central station. You can transfer to the Metro network though. One-way ticket is € 8 (metro fare is € 1.50).
The Terravision Bus runs a shuttle service between Fiumicino Airport Terminal 3 and Rome Central Station (Termini station) which takes about an hour. Tickets can be booked online (€ 4) or there (€ 6). The ticket is not a guaranteed seat though, and it may be that you would need to wait for the next bus.

A taxi into Rome city center will take about 45 minutes. Since 2012 there is a mandatory flat fare of € 48 for a taxi ride into the center which is a good thing as you will know exactly what it will cost and drivers will now take the shortest route. Considering that trains are fairly expensive, the taxi is a good option if you are with two or three persons.
