Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is a medium sized airport in the north east of Peninsular Malaysia close to Thailand, 8km from the city of Kota Bharu.
The airport is a former Royal Air Force base, after the Second World War it was transformed to be a civilian airport. In 2002 a new modern terminal opened, providing shops, car rental and restaurants. The terminal was upgraded again in 2016 and apron and taxiways were improved as well.
Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is not a large airport so there are not many flights departing here. There are only a few destinations that you can reach from Sultan Ismail Petra Airport, most of these are operated by Malaysia Airlines. Many people take a flight to Kuala Lumpur and transfer to another flight there.
The Sultain Ismail Petra Airport is located about 10 km northeast of Kota Bharu city center.
There is a Citilink bus line #9 which shuttles between the city of Kota Bharu and the airport, departing in front of the terminal. Departures are hourly and the bus operates between 7:00 till 19:00. Fare is about RM 2.00.
Taxi's can be found outside the arrival hall with fixed prices depending on your destination, expect to pay about RM 30 to the city center.
