Sultan Ismail Petra Airport is a medium sized airport in the north east of Peninsular Malaysia close to Thailand, 8km from the city of Kota Bharu. The airport is a former Royal Air Force base, after the Second World War it was transformed to be a civilian airport. In 2002 a new modern terminal opened, providing shops, car rental and restaurants. The terminal was upgraded again in 2016 and apron and taxiways were improved as well.
