The Sheremetyevo International Airport is one of three large airports serving Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation, together with Domodedovo and Vnukovo Internation Airport. With well over 30 million passengers a year Sheremetyevo is the busiest Russian Airport and the eleventh busiest of Europe. Sheremetyevo was a military airfield but opened for civilian flights in 1959. The opening of a second terminal, just in time for the 1980 Russian Summer Olympics, greatly increased the capacity of Sheremetyevo Airport. The old Terminal 1 is now used for domestic flights and the new Terminal 2 for international flights. In the last years many airlines have left Sheremetyevo for the more comfortable and newer Domodedovo Airport and the airport has invested heavily in terminal and transport facilities but still the large majority of flights is from national airline Aeroflot only.
