The airport was officially opened on March 27, 1914 as a Royal Thai Air Force airport. In 1924 Don Mueang Airport commenced on commercial operation too with the arrival of the first commercial KLM flight to Don Mueang.
Before the closure of Don Mueang Airport the airport was the operational center of Thai Airways International and has served most air traffic in Thailand with more than 80 airlines, 160,000 flights, 30 million passengers and 700,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
