Oslo Airport, also called Gandermoen Airport to distinguish it from other airports in Oslo, is the main airport serving Oslo, the capital of Norway. Oslo Airport is the largest airport in Norway and one of the few in the world with a high-speed rail connection (max 210 km/h) and is thanks to that the airport with the largest percentage of passengers using public transport in the world (70%).
The Airport opened in 1998 at Gandermoen at a cost of over a billion euro, after a decades-long debate how to deal with the congestion at Fornebu Airport. Since the opening at Gandermoen the airport has experienced serious problems with frozen fog and super-cooled rain in winter months, sometimes causing damage to aircraft engines and emergency landings.
Most flights from Oslo Airport are to Amsterdam and to Bergen but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by SAS Scandinavian Airlines. Every day there are flights to 20 destinations from Oslo Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
The Airport has one terminal with domestic gates on the western side and international gates in the east. The customs procedures for transfers from an international to domestic flight (and vice versa) are time-consuming and a hassle: you would need to get your checked baggage first, pass customs and check your baggage back in to your connecting flight. Many travelers with transfers avoid Oslo Airport and use other airports for their transfer.
Oslo Airport is located 45 km northeast of Oslo.
With the decision of building Oslo Airport it was also decided to construct a high-speed railway line from Oslo to the airport, continuing to Eidsvoll. The high-speed rail line opened the same day as the airport. The Flytoget Express will bring you in just 20 minutes to Oslo Central station, trains depart 6 times an hour and a ticket cost NOK 180.
Normal NSB commuter trains to Oslo depart on another platform and can take you to Oslo Central in 25 minutes, trains depart every half hour and a ticket cost NOK 90.
The Flybussen is a shuttle bus between the airport and Oslo city center which will take about 45 minutes and the fare is NOK 150.

Official taxis operate with a fixed price depending on your destination. A taxi into the central city will cost NOK 700. Best not to flag a taxi down yourself and use the meter as this will be more expensive.
