The Stockholm Arlanda Airport is with 25 million passengers a year Swedish largest airport.
The airport officially opened in 1962 but most flights still used the old Bromma airport. Only intercontinental flights were moved to the new Arlanda Airport because of the longer runway at Arlanda. By 1983 all domestic traffic also had moved to Arlanda Airport.
Most flights from Stockholm Arlanda Airport are to Amsterdam and to Helsinki but there are many more flights to other destinations as well, most of them by SAS Scandinavian Airlines. Every day there are flights to 7 destinations from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. Here are the most popular destinations:
Arlanda Airport has three runways and four terminals and is capable of handling the largest wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380. Terminals 3 and 4 are used for domestic flights while terminals 2 and 5 are for international flights.
The close proximity to the Baltic Sea and cold air from the north causes heavy snowfall in the winter months. Arlanda has the policy to never close, even in the midst of heaviest snowfall. It can cause delays though. In the winter months the airport employs a staff of 100 people for snow clearing. It helps that the airport has three runways, so one can be cleared while the other two are still in use for take-off and landing.
The airport is located between Stockholm and Uppsala: 35 km north of Stockholm and 40 km southeast of Uppsala (Sweden's fourth largest city).
Arlanda Airport has a high-speed rail link with central Stockholm. There are two stations, Arlanda South (for Terminal 2, 3 and 4) and Arlanda North (for Terminal 5). The train departs four to six times an hour and can bring you to Stockholm Central Station in 20 minutes; one-way ticket is SEK 280.
Normal commuter trains depart from Arlanda Central station (located under Sky City between Terminal 4 and 5). Trains run twice an hour and take 37 minutes to Stockholm Central Station; one-way fare is SEK 135.
Cheapest option is the express buses: Flygbussarna or Swebus. Both run services to City Terminal, just next to Stockholm Central Station. The bus ride takes about 45 minutes and costs SEK 99.
